July 30 is National Whistleblower Appreciation Day. According to the IRS, whistleblowers have played an important role in its efforts to promote fairness and accountability, as well as collect funds from noncompliant taxpayers. In fact, since issuing its first award in 2007, the IRS has paid over $1.3 billion in awards based on the successful collection of $7.5 billion from noncompliant taxpayers. Last year, the IRS paid out $123.5 million based on whistleblower information that led to the collection of $474.7 million in taxes. Fun fact: The Continental Congress passed America’s first whistleblower law on July 30, 1778.
