Government Shutdown Could Disrupt IRS Services Ahead of Oct. 15 Filing Deadline!

The IRS’s contingency plan called for it to remain open and fully staffed (funded by Inflation Reduction Act money) for at least the first five business days of the current federal government shutdown. However, the plan updated on Sept. 29, 2025 (https://bit.ly/4o6alcc), didn’t specify what would happen after that. According to Bloomberg, if the government remains closed, the IRS plans to furlough nearly half its staffers starting on Oct. 8. Furloughs could affect IRS services, including call center operations, shortly before the Oct. 15 extended filing date. The U.S. Treasury Dept. has stated that IRS implementation of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act would continue past the five-day mark.
