IRS Furloughs Nearly Half Its Workforce as Government Shutdown Continues — Oct. 15 Tax Deadline Still Stands！

With the government shutdown now a little over a week old, the IRS announced it has begun furloughing nearly half of its staff. According to the tax agency’s updated shutdown contingency plan, around 34,400 of its 74,300 employees have been furloughed. The plan notes that the majority of employees being retained work in taxpayer services, including customer service representatives, tax examiners and staffers who process tax returns with payments. Regardless of the IRS’s staffing, remember that if you filed for a six-month extension to file your 2024 individual income tax return, Oct. 15 is the due date to file the return.
