IRS Shake-Up: Billy Long Out, Treasury Secretary Steps In!

President Trump has removed Billy Long as the IRS commissioner. Long, a former Republican member of Congress from Missouri, was sworn in as the 51st IRS commissioner in June. His term was to run through June 2027. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will temporarily serve as acting IRS commissioner. Since Trump took office in January, the IRS has had several leaders. In addition to the changes at the top, the IRS has lost 25% of its workforce since January amid government cuts and mass buyouts, according to a July inspector general report. There’s no word on who Trump might nominate next to lead the tax agency. Stay tuned.
