Social Media Tax Scams Are Costing Taxpayers Millions — Don’t Be Next!

Despite frequent IRS warnings, taxpayers continue to fall victim to fraudulent tax scams spread on social media. The scams may relate to the Fuel Tax Credit, the Sick and Family Leave Credit, or another tax break. James Clifford, an IRS director, said these scams “can cost taxpayers dearly.” Thousands of taxpayers have been misled to file inaccurate returns, often resulting in denied refunds and more. People who follow this advice could end up with rejected claims and penalties. Since 2022, the IRS has imposed more than 32,000 penalties totaling more than $162 million related to social media tax scams.
