Think the IRS Texted You? Think Again

How do you know if an email or text message purportedly from the IRS is real? Criminals are increasing their misuse of electronic messages, social media and even U.S. mail to trick taxpayers into giving up sensitive information or making payments. The IRS is warning that it never contacts taxpayers via digital channels without prior consent. If you receive a communication claiming to be from the IRS, contact us or verify it through your IRS Online Account (https://bit.ly/46EwsRs). Also know that the IRS doesn’t make unannounced in-person visits and never issues threats or requests payment with prepaid or gift cards.
