When Can I Start Filing My 2023 Taxes?

Though Tax Day is still a couple months away on Monday, April 15th, Tax Season will soon be starting. This period allows taxpayers to file and have their tax returns processed before the deadline, usually resulting in getting their refunds much quicker. The IRS has officially set the start of Tax Season for Monday January 29th, 2024, meaning that you can submit your tax return at that time.

But just because the IRS will not accept your tax return until January 29th doesn’t mean that you cannot begin working on it now. At XQ CPA, we’ve always recommended being prepared early so you can then weigh the options of filing by Tax Day or filing an extension. Getting a head start on your taxes can also mitigate any surprises and errors that could be caused by last-minute preparation.

If you do plan on submitting your taxes as soon as possible, and you are claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC), keep in mind that the IRS will not issue your refund until after mid-February due to the Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes Act. You can use the IRS’s Where’s My Refund tool to stay updated on its status.

Additionally, the IRS has updated many of its online services. Taxpayers who made $79,000 or less in 2023 can use IRS Free File starting January 12th to hold their tax returns until the electronic filing date opens. Taxpayers should also make an IRS Online Account to view their tax transcripts, documents, and to authorize their tax professionals.

As Tax Season approaches, we’ll be bringing you more updates and guidance on filing your 2023 tax return correctly and on time. Make sure to follow XQ CPA’s social media to stay informed, and if you do not yet have a tax professional, reach out to our in-house experts today! Give us a call or make an appointment online.
